This is only what someone told me, not ‘official’, but here’s what I have heard from an artist who has worked in Italy.
There is a lot of wonderful, famous, ancient architecture there in need of conservation. As a result, there are also many skilled conservation architects. However, much of this architecture is owned by the government, which has no money to pay for those projects (have you heard of ‘austerity’ recently?). There was an earthquake about a year ago that destroyed many ancient buildings across Italy–and they have not been restored.
So in answer to your question–if you are intending to take that degree and move elsewhere to work in the field, it may be worthwhile. If you are hoping to stay in Italy and find work in that field, then you’re going to have a hard time of it.
